About Counseling With Matt Gomes:

I come from the philosophy that YOU have the answers to your problems within you. Together we can discover your own inner resources to tackle ANY problem and create your health story.

I certainly find great joy in helping couples learn how to better communicate and increase the intimacy in their lives. The couples that come in to see me learn and practice the skills that I have personally found effective in my own relationships. You get what I actually practice in my own life (individuals get this as well!).

A couple things you might want to know before you call for an appointment...

My Style

Frankly, I might not be the right therapist for you. My style of therapy is based on short-term, results-focused solutions. I believe every "problem" that you have has served (and continues to serve) a purpose. All your "good" and "bad" behavior takes care of a need (or, most of the time, a number of needs). It's our job to find out what the need is and take care of it using better behavior. Behavior that you are proud of.

I have found that, by gently challenging your view of the world, you will have multiple ways of looking at a situation. This gives you more choices for better solutions.

I respect and care for the people who come in to see me, yet I work from the "Tarantula Theory of Change". Tarantulas wear their skeletons on the outside (exoskeleton). When they grow, they start to press against their exoskeleton. Growth becomes very uncomfortable. If they want to grow beyond that discomfort, they have to shed their skeleton, but this leaves them very vulnerable.

Therapy is similar. You will be uncomfortable... and this is necessary for growth. You will be vulnerable... and this is necessary for growth. My desire is to help you move through those uncomfortable, vulnerable periods of growth.

Insurance

Many people ask about insurance. I understand that, with insurance, you pay very little. Unfortunately, most insurance companies will only give you a limited amount of sessions (typically 10-20). After that, you pay full fare. Also, because insurance companies only pay for certain mental disorders, the therapist must diagnose you and report that. This diagnosis then is part of your record and might be detrimental to future dealings with the insurance company.

I offer low enough rates to make it affordable for long-term success and, by not going through insurance, I don't have to convince administrators that you are "sick" enough for more sessions. This means you and I decide how long you want to work.

If you have more questions, or would like to book an initial appointment, please give me a call at (925) 485-9370.
